Kexgill is the brainchild of Dr Michael Lee. Dismayed by the sub-standard student accommodation conditions during his own time at University, Dr Lee had a vision to provide quality private sector student accommodation. This was at a time that accommodation was dominated mainly by the Universities so this was no easy task for one man.

Dr Lee graduated from Aston University in Birmingham before obtaining a PhD at Hull University.  After a period of working as a Research Fellow at Hull University, he started on his mission that would go on to change the face of student accommodation forever.

Initially Dr Lee purchased and modernised property in Hull to let to students. Humble beginnings for what was to follow. As the number of properties grew, Dr Lee established Kexgill Ltd in 1978. The group grew quickly and expanded to serve the needs of a further seven cities – Liverpool, Preston, Salford, Bradford, Nottingham, Middlesbrough and Stockton (Durham Campus). In 2006 Kexgill decided to venture into Europe and entered the German property market. There they made strategic property purchases in North Rhine Westphalia, Leipzig and Berlin.

From those few houses in Hull back in 1978, today the group can boast to having over 3000 student beds in its UK portfolio. This makes it one of the largest still privately owned student accommodation providers in the UK. The portfolio in the UK has a healthy mix of Halls of Residence, apartments and Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs).

The team to support Dr Lee has also grown considerably too – having over 75 staff members across the country (see “The People” to get an understanding of why our staff love their jobs).

Due to its rapid expansion in recent years, impressive national awards have followed with wins in The Estates Gazette Awards and entering the list for Best Places to Work in Property (see “The Recognition” for a full list of national and regional awards).

In an ever changing sector, Kexgill still remains true to its original philosophies of Dr Lee – to provide quality private sector student accommodation.
